Dial-up General Information
A dial-up connection is a type of Internet access in which the
customer uses a modem that resides inside of the computer that connects to a
telephone line in order to dial into an IPS’s (Internet service provider) node
to create and establish a modem-to-modem connection, which is then routed to
the Internet.
Dial-up
requires no additional hardware for the phone network to provide this
service, thus making it the most widely available form of internet
access. Dial-up is often used by residents in remote or rural areas
where a broadband connection is impossible due to lack of population or
demand.
Dial-up takes time to establish a connection to the
Internet and perform handshaking before the transmission of data can
take place; this process generally takes 5-60 seconds depending on your
location.
Performance
Modern
dial-up modems generally have a maximum theoretical speed of 56 kbit/s
(7KB/s), although it's rare for the speed to exceed 52 kbit/s due to
the computational overhead. These speeds are currently considered the
maximum possible for a dial-up access connection; in most cases the
transfer rates will range from 30-45 kbit/s.
Dial-up connections
usually have a very high latency that can often be as high as 400MS (a
4 second delay) or even more, this can make videoconferencing and
online gaming very difficult.
High-speed dial-up
Often
high-speed dial-up Internet access is being offered by providers such
as NetZero and Earthlink as a new form of dial-up access that utilizes
the newer v.92 modem standards in order to shorten the log-on process,
and then once a connection has been established the ISP will compress,
cache, filter information being sent to the customers computer with the
effect of increasing the speed of browsing web pages.
The
terminology "high-speed" is very misleading as this process doesn't
actually increase the bandwidth within the line rather makes more
efficient use of the bandwidth already there.
